Making the Move: How to Help a Parent Settle Into Care

Even when it is the right decision, moving into care is a big change. Feelings of loss, worry and relief often come all at once, for your parent and for you. These steps can help the first weeks go more gently.

Before the move

  • Involve your parent in decisions wherever you can, from the day of the move to what to bring.
  • Share their routine with the care team: when they like to wake, eat and sleep, favorite foods, and the small things that matter.
  • Make a list of medications, doctors and important contacts.

Make the room feel like theirs

Familiar things make a new room feel like home. Photos, a favorite blanket, a bedside lamp, books and a few treasured objects can make a big difference. Ask the home what you can bring.

The first few weeks

  • Visit often at first, but keep visits short if your parent is tired.
  • Join a meal or an activity together.
  • Give it time. Most people need a few weeks to settle into a new routine.
  • Keep talking with the care team about how things are going.

Look after yourself too

Many family caregivers feel guilt after a move, even when they know it was right. It may help to remember that you are still caring for your parent, just in a different way: as their advocate, their visitor and their family.
